The Bear Fountain – A Beloved Landmark in Nykøbing Falster.
In the heart of Nykøbing Falster stands the Bear Fountain – a sculpture that has become an iconic symbol of the town over the years. Originally called "The Nykøbing Bear," the sculpture was a gift from merchant Jeppesen in celebration of the town's 400th anniversary in 1939. The impressive bear and the fountain basin are carved from Bornholm granite, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. The bear’s lifelike granite fur and delicate balance over the water exude a charm that few can resist.
The Bear Fountain is much more than just a sculpture – it is a gathering place and a living part of the town's identity. Children splash and play in the water, while students traditionally celebrate their graduation with cheers and dances around the bear. The local football club, NFC, has also embraced the bear as part of their logo, symbolizing strength, community, and pride.
This fountain also holds a historical significance. It was erected to commemorate Tsar Peter the Great’s visit to Nykøbing Falster in 1716, highlighting the town’s importance throughout history.
A Tribute to the Soul of the Town
